Out here (meaning the U.S. West) sometimes the manufacturer will bring a fleet of demo bikes for test rides to a nearby dealer and if you sign up in advance, you can test ride one or more models. Otherwise, if the dealer has a bike he's willing to use for demo purposes, you must sign a sales agreement to buy the bike if you are satisfied with it after the test ride. If you don't like the bike, you are under no obligation to buy it, but expect sales pressure.
Now is a good time to buy. Ads on CycleTrader, indicate Honda may be offering dealer incentives on unsold 2016 Africa Twins. I've seen references to Honda Bonus Bucks ($1000) and a couple of Florida dealers are posting "come-on" prices of $12000 for DCT models (expect high dealer fees). And in SoCal, LA Cycle Sports has a DCT AT priced at $13000 with no dealer fees except an $80 doc charge. Tax and license are extra in any case.
Yeah, we Northern Nevada riders share the same roads in the Sierras that you used to ride. But San Diego has some outstanding roads as well and the weather is a lot nicer, at least right now. There is some flooding around the area - devastating to those hit by it, but it's not a new experience for those living along waterways.
