I've done 580 miles on my KLR on 6 occasions. Albeit I had to be at a destination on a specified day. The AT being far more comfy and freeway capable the same route would be easily doable. However, if time wasn't an issue, I would have rather done 300 in a day then have time for sight seeing and general lollygagging.
Was that on a stock seat 2016/2017? Aftermarket? I'm sorta of wondering how the new stock seat will feel. I'm usually 2 Up also until my wife gets her own.
I should get my bike next week ( so excited!) I've been riding a Kawi Versys 300 and it my butt hurts in 10 minutes.
I’ve done 450, but that’s to get somewhere ASAP. I agree with Mudslingr’s view, sometimes you have to go by time rather than distance. Enjoyment of riding is the main factor for me, if it’s a chore, then it spoils the trip.
I'm with Mudslingr, it is more about saddle time than distance, and 6 hours riding a day - broken into a couple of 3 hour sections - is my optimum. I have done a 12 hr day from Sydney to Broken Hill (1100km) to get to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia asap, but that was so uncomfortable on my neck, lower back, and arse that I vowed never to do it again!
I’ve done the Ironbutt on the AT
Does that count?
I’m also planning Crater Lake this coming Memorial Weekend
L.A. -> Mt. Shasta -> Crater Lake ->
Glass Beach-> L.A.
I just drove my ATAS 651 km (404.5 miles) in about 9 hours as the last part of a three night trip here in Norway, and it sure is the most comfortable bike I've ever own. 500 miles a day should be no problem if needed.
I really like how I can move around on the ATAS seat, and how comfortable the bike is to ride while standing. What I don't like is the horrible buffeting and wind hitting the top of my helmet (I'm 190cm), so I need to find a solution for that.
On a recent cross Australia trip of 12000 km (7500 mile), my average per day was 650 km (400 mile). This was a comfortable days ride without too much stress so long as I stopped every 1.5 - 2.0 hours to give my arse a break.
I'm in the 400 mile range or so. Gives time for some breaks and sightseeing. That said, the White Rim trail in Canyonlands N.P. was 140 round trip, with 80 or so off road, and was all I wanted in a day.
If I am traveling on my twin I will go 600 plus daily... My longest day in the saddle was on my way from Lake George NY to Wyoming.... day 2 850 miles. On an average day run with my buddies though and not chugging down a freeway 200-300
My longest ride on the AT was about 13 hours (440miles -- 180miles were Offroad to the north rim of the Grand Canyon) !!! However, I would need a more firm and higher seat for my weight and height.
From my logs the 1254km from Renfrew, Ontario to Nipigon, Ontario was the longest on the trans-canada highway. I however do not recommend that kind of self abuse unless you are of unsound mind.
On the stock seat, 6 hours is about the point where I would rather be off the bike than on it. By 7.5-8 hours, I'm really starting to suffer.
I have an airhawk waiting to be tested out this weekend on a 10-hour ride with a pillion split over 2 days.
I am hoping with the airhawk I can manage a comfortable 8 or 9 hours. I have a 22-day return trip this summer up to Tuktoyaktuk with 19 days in the saddle, 12 of which are going to be 8-10 hours each.
I'll be riding 215 miles today to go get a burrito at Bobby's Place in Pasadena (formerly Rick's Burrito as mentioned by Steve Dahl, a radio guy I used to listen to when I lived in Wisconsin/Illinois).
Did about 500km yesterday over 6 hours & I was glad to get off her. I seem to get a pain in my left shoulder & left index finger. Don't know why this is. Great bike all the same (17 model)
shoulder may be from being seated too far from the bars. I get the same thing and I think bringing the bars forward will help. They made that change to the 2018.
Hi there, I rode from Elko, NV to Cortez, CO, just under 600 miles in one day last week. Other than a sore fanny by the time I rolled through Moab, I felt fine. In fact, I commented to my sister in law about how well I felt considering I'd spent about ten hours traveling. It's more fun to poke around, and I'd rather have travelled half that distance in a day. But, if the need arises, you can certainly spend a long day on the AT.
I'm about to find out I'm heading up to my nephew's graduation in Minnesota coming from Colorado. It's about 920 miles one way. I'm leaving this Wednesday at 6 am. I have done 1000 miles in a day on my other bike a couple of times nc700x one time from Colorado to Corpus Christi and back in 2 -1/2 days so no doubts I can cover that milage on my AT.
I've just returned from a back roads tour of France and found 250 miles to be the best daily mileage. One day I did 400 miles and it was too much. Mind you I did those 400 miles on one tank! (UK mpg!)
I've finished the first half of a 3600-mile trip, and I found the weather to be a big factor in how far I wanted to ride. Very hot (95-100F) and windy really took it out of me. Best I could do was 325 miles before I melted. I did 400 once I got away from that, but I wasn't pushing. In the hot wind, I got about 46 mpg (US). Cooler and stiller, I got more like 60.
