Going to the Pyrenees.

I'm off to the Pyrenees next week. 8 days travelling to a total of around 1300 miles.

My tyres are Pirelli Scorpion str and they have done 3,600 miles. The rear tread depth at a glance looks like it's getting low. It's squared off a bit but using a digital tread depth gauge it's showing 4mm in the centre.

I have a new tyre here but I don't want to fit it unnecessarily.

Mathematics tell me I could easily do the trip on my existing tyres.

What do you think?

I would think the tire will make the trip. I have 4000 miles on my original tires on my atas and I’m pretty sure it has another 900 left.

My question is why?
Sure there -n- back probably no issues but in 8 days with the bike being your only transportation you can rack quite a few more miles on them. My last week long trip was only 12hours one way from my door, but in the end I put a little over 6500+ miles (about 1/3 of those off tarmac).
So, again, why? Just change them, after scrub in, better traction and no worries... keep them and throw them back on after you ware the new set to nothing

I also run a Pirelli STR rear (with a Conti TKC80 front) which has done 4000 miles and I just measured 3.5mm centre tread depth. When it was new, the tread depth was 5mm, so it is lasting well given the extensive off road riding I have been doing. I think your rear tyre will last the trip well, it seems to me that the rear STR will last for at least 8000 miles on the CRF while still working relatively ok off-road.

Wow, you guys are getting long mileage out of it.
My rear Pirelli STR only lasted me 6300km (aprox 400miles), then it was totally toast.

I do ride many high speed highway miles, so perhaps that speeds up the wear.

This must be the case, in my bike the rear Rally STR is on a second rear wheel which I use it only for off-road riding and pottering around town - when I travel on tarmac I put the primary rear wheel which currently has a TKC70 on it.

I've checked re checked the tread depth on my rear STR and it's 3.9 to 4.2mm around the centre.
I think they start out at 9mm so going by that 3.7k in 5mm should give approximately 740 miles per mm. In other words. Pryenees covered.

More importantly, post lots of photos. I was fortunate enough to tour around parts of Europe one year ago this month but was unable to make it to the Pyrenees. I'd love to see any photos you take. Enjoy the trip.

Quick update.
I've lost about 0.5mm over the last 1350 miles. I rode alot of mountain passes some at speed and the tyres and bike took it all in its stride. I've managed to round off the tyre profile and used the entire tyre front and rear. Very impressed with the STR's.
We travelled in a group of seven bikes with steady riding 95% of the time. Averaged over 60mpg.
I managed a little off roading up a mountain track along side a ski lift.
Pretty steep and off camber with loose gravel. I nearly came unstuck loosing power near the top of the climb due to tc being set to high.
My mate on his Tracer wasn't so lucky. No damage but couldn't go up or down.
It took two of us to right the bike and turn it down the slope.
The bicycle below were at the top of a Tour De France climb. The wheels were around 3m across.
Bottom left is the top of bottom right.
10 miles of down hill towards France.
