Offroad tour tool kit

As most of you have already realised, the stock Africa Twin tool kit is pretty poor.
I've now done a few multi day trips off road and am about to leave on another with a friend.
I shared with him my tool setup so we can think about what not to double up on.
I recon this setup is about as light as you can go without some special made multi tool.

Thought this may be helpful to others. (see image)


n.b.
  • I do not have tire levers in this set, my riding partner is bringing his.
  • The only thing that would be nice is a 14mm socket for the front brakes. Most sets stop the small driver sockets at 13mm. To have 14mm I would have to also carry an adapter. I can get away with the adjustable spanner for this though if it really comes to it.
  • Also not shown here is a tooth probe in my toiletries bag. It is a proper dentists stainless steel one and is ideal for opening the plastic fairing pop connectors.
  • Not show here is spares either. wire, cable ties, glue, duck tape, spare tubes, etc...
  • I am not going to be very far from western civilization so no crazy collection of spares.
  • The outline 27mm wrench is already cable tied to my frame so I was not going to remove it simply for this pic. (tip: I have slipped it into a section of bicycle tube so it doesn't rattle against the frame and allows me to get it nice and snug against the frame)

Hope this helps some people out.
Let me know if I have forgotten anything in your opinion, or if you have any other ideas.

Nice work, personally I would also add a short length of bailing wire (or some light steel wire) and sections of electrical tape. Both can be wrapped around the handle of your driver for storage. I like to pre-cut the sections of electrical tape and wrap them on the handle of a screwdriver, this way if some is needed you just peel off a strip, but in the mean time itís still useable...

22mm wrench for front axle, zip ties, the tape on a wrench or screwdriver is a great compact tip, metal putty or jb weld can be a trip saver, recommend patch kit as well as tubes

Thanks so much for spotting this.
I have come up with a simple compact solution.

I have cut a simple 5mm thick shim that I can use with the 27mm spanner (image)

Also I have shown how I mount this spanner to the bike.
The stupid thing is meant for some crazy work it seem. It weighs 400g! (14oz)

Yeah I have such things but are not in image. I do not call these tools.
This just handy stuff to have for repairs of all sorts.

Yea it seems that the ONE thing we donít carry weíll end up needing and all the other stuff you do carry youíll (hardly) never use... Iím pretty sure itís all the doing of bike gremlins, thatís they way they work

I have learnt from a lot of bicycle expeditions that the hidden benifit from carrying less is not obvious till you carry too much.
I am aiming for sub 22kg of luggage, and I mean all luggage. (<50lb)
Its amazing what you can pick up along the way to help out.
We are not going to mars after all.

Air pump? tire spoons? Bead breaker? Trail stand? The desert can be a bit void of logs and rocks to support the bike, that may not be an issue for you. Spoons with the box end wrenches are handy, dual purpose and eliminate that chunk of iron zip tied to the frame.

Yeah this was not in the image. I have a bicycle pump along with me and a tyre pressure guage. My riding buddy has the tyre levers.

My decades of drinking beer have armed with with enough weight to be a built in bead breaker!
