|sjhoff67||I had the valves checked at 17k miles. Just one of the exhaust valves needed adjustment all the others were within tolerances. While they were checking the valves I had them replace the air filters as well. My total cost including the air filters was $567. I was billed for 7.5 hrs labor.|

I just don't get why Honda did this to people. An adventure bike needs to be serviceable. An air filter needs to be a 10 minute job.
As for valves I'm now 65 and run my bikes easy these days. Just touring/camping and easy cruising. No more hi-RPM stuff like when I was in my 20s.
I can easily run a bike to 80km (50,000 miles) and not worry about valve shim clearance. Last time I checked a set of valves at 30,000 miles the were still fine. So I no longer even think about them.
I was giving the AT a serious look but from all I have seen/read/heard, I may take it off the list. I think I will wait till I can see the Yamaha T700. I like the size, fit, more power then I need but I have got to have a bike that is easy to service.

|Davy F||My bike has now turned over 16k miles and I donít intend to get the valve check carried out until itís winter hibernation period. At most, Iíll have another 1500/2000 more miles done by then and as other have reported, bikes are still in spec at up to 20k miles.|

|Grizzly||I normally work on all my bikes. I've been deep into motors with no issues other than some busted knuckles and cuss words. After reading this thread I am glad I opted for the 3 year maintenance plan when I bought it. Typically dealers make **** tons of money on these because people dont ride. I ride on avg 10k-15k miles per year. So I'll be well into the 30's by the time the service agreement runs out. Sounds like at 12k i'll be ahead in costs with $1000+ mentioned for the valve checks/adjustment, The 3 year plan was an additional $1500. It covers the bike for everything according to Honda's maintenance schedule.|

About 1/2 way through my 2nd valve check at 36K miles, yeah, running a bit behind due to being on a trip.
This is a HUGE PITA undertaking IMHO but totally doable if you are careful and document what you are doing and have a copy of Hondas TERRIBLE shop manual.
If you don't have confidence in yourself as a mechanic don't even consider it.
The ATwin like most current bikes in designed with CAD and there isn't a spare inch of anything, ****, there is hardly AIR in between components.
Someone said their shop did the job in 4 hours. Sorry, but I believe they SAID they did it.. but did not really, you'd have to be a freaking wiz-bang mechanic with 8 octopus arms to do it that fast.
Takes me 3 days. I work until I cannot stand it any more, and when I start cursing in Japanese I knock off for the day.
Once the valves are exposed.... CHECKING them takes 15 minutes... Adjusting depends on whether or not the intakes are off; if so you must pull the camshaft and swap shims...
By the way.. anyone know what diameter shims this thing uses??? Can't seem to find a positive answer.
My '13 Triumph Trophy is as bad or worse. $1200 bucks plus for a 20K service... I do that myself as well, but curse in British...
