black99S On the side stand I make sure there is enough chain slack to touch the swingarm midspan.

If you really want to get it right use a ratchet strap to pull down the rear suspension until the front sprocket shaft, swingarm pivot and rear axle are all in a line. This is the tightest point for the chain. Adjust so there is is a small amount of play at this point - it should NOT be drum tight. Then put bike back on side stand or main stand and measure / check slack somewhere you can consistently check easily and adjust to easily without a ruler.

RayCollington I thoroughly recommend downloading the free CRF1000 workshop manual. Don't ask me for the link but it is on the forum and in online search.

Is it not on the side of the chain guard like the 16 and 17 had 40mm on a sticker. The service manual says between 35mm to 45mm while on the sidestand midway between the sprockets.
