2021 AT and ATAS DCT stalling Issue

21590 Views 101 Replies 33 Participants Last post by  BumpyRider
I just wanted to have a feel for how many of you are experiencing the random DCT stalling issue at low RPM situations?
Is this an extensive issue or only a small handful of the bikes are experiencing this for the Model Year 2021?

Please sound off.

Thanks.

... as some Forum members have complained / claimed over the summer.

Good talk this Forum.
After a year plus of me telling Honda to just go read this forum, they finally believe us...
I'm starting to wonder if a lot of rear brake usage for slow riding (as I did) messes up the training of the DCT. Some factor of brake, throttle, speed. Then when you pull off at a junction with low revs and no rear brake it stalls.
From a 5mph start I turned into a junction, bike stalled and tipped over. Have been sole searching for a cause and your experience is similar to mine. I was practicing u-turns with slow managers and rear brake just before it happened.

Hi pjcdublin. I did a DCT reset several months ago and have hardly used the brake since fir low speed. No problems, smooth. May be minutely degraded since the reset but hard to tell. Focused on very light throttle practice using 2 fingers on the top of brake lever and glove friction rather than a firm grip. Much more relaxed.

Have you had the recall done? one of the things that it was for was the stalling issue some people experience.

My 2020 DCT non adventure model stalled once in 53.000 kilometers. It was in a steep low speed right hand turn and boom, the bike fell down.

2021 DCT 10,500 miles. No stalling, except when I drop her

Heck, it seems even when I drop bikes they some how fail to stall even when supposedly they are to do that.

I reckon the 202x AT is superbly designed to implement that behavior correctly.

I've had my 21 Twin DCT stall on me around a week ago for the very first time since owning it (around 4000km) Didn't think much of it as I was on a dirt road and did push the bike hard.

Fast forward a week later and it now has happened twice to me in one day in normal traffic. Each time coming to a stop, Rpms will slightly drop and when accelerating it will cut out. It's a scary experience in traffic at a stop sign.

I'm from south Africa and have contacted my dealer. Will see what they say.

For the riders that had their bikes recalled, has it been fixed?
That would be a scary experience @johnguva - just like mismanaging a clutch, and then rushing to determine the situation around you.

Very good details. Thanks!
We may be coming closer to being able to reproduce the behavior at will.

Does anyone know if this behavior also occur in other models with DCT or is it just AT?
My 2017 had stalled around 4 to 5 times always crawling in traffic and trailing the rear brake with feet on the pegs, so when it does stall I only just saved it.......you do feel a bit of a tool !. Do you have to see a dealer for a DCT reset?
US Model 2021 1100 ATAS DCT - Had Stalling and hesitation issues while accelerating from a dead stop. There was a recall on that issue (at least in the US) so took the bike to the dealer and they updated some software. Haven't had the problem since.

Cheers (y) , might have to call by a dealer and see if there is and recall on the 2017

You can put your VIN into the Honda site and it will tell you if any recalls are required.
The particular one is CRF1100 though.

Anyway here is where you can put your vin into.

2021 AS ES
About 7 times in 6000 miles. First 5 were in the first 1000 miles.
It's always been low throttle input taking off from a stop. Usually in S1 / Urban mode.

I had to call Honda yesterday about something else and I asked why the technical info, videos I sent to their engineers in an email with a case number as they requested, never got a reply. They said they considered the case closed! I asked about what had changed in the 2022 models and they said they couldn't tell me and they'd reopen the case but it would require the dealer to investigate my bike. This would be the fifth drop off where the dealer does that. I really wish they'd take this more seriously as it could lead to a rear end collision easily.
Could lead to more than a rear ending if making a left turn on a busy road. Could mean getting t boned.
2020 ATAS ES DCT 47,500 miles. Happened once when in neutral blipping the throttle before I took off on my morning commute. Never while in S or D.

Sorry Nothemama missed your post. No recall on 17 that I'm aware of. I have a 17. DCT reset is real easy takes 1 minute. Not at home so don't have the manual but someone spelled it out in a forum. Think this one. Speds

Hmm had mine for 4 years and 26,000+ miles and had one stall from the DCT
Notthemama

Warm engine in neutral

Stop engine with ignition key

Hold down D switch and turn on ignition with the key, keep D switch held down until MIL light goes off. That puts bike into reset mode.

Release D switch

Operate the N-D switch as follows fairly smoothly:
D and release
D
N
D
N

D and S lights up together on screen and "-" s displayed blinking at 2 sec intervals

Start engine and idle

D and S and "-" will disappear and you get N

Switch off with ignition key

Done

Worked straight away for me. Not for some. If doesn't just repeat. Don't rush the steps nor introduce big delays.

Good luck
