Read on another forum that Honda is having a press launch for the Africa Twin in South Africa from December 2nd to 5th.

Don't suppose someone from the forum is going to it?

Not me! But I do subscribe to The Bike Show on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/IgnitionBikeShow/featured which originates in South Africa as a motorcycling television program with some segments uploaded to YouTube for world wide distribution. They seem to be well connected to South Africa motorcycle industry and will likely get an invite to attend the launch. And if they don't, I posted a comment with your info on the event asking if they would attend and give us an objective review of the AT.

Well, I went back to where I posted my request - and realized that the show hosts didn't really participate in the "Discussions". And neither did anyone else. People just posted flattery, love notes and other comments. Continued my search and discovered that YouTube provides for sending messages to other users (Channel owners?) under the "ABOUT" tab. So I sent my request that way. And will report back if/when someone replies - or uploads a report on the event or AT, to YouTube (Subscribers get notices whenever they upload something new.)

Hi, I am Dries van der Walt, a South African bike journalist and I stumbled upon this thread while researching the Africa Twin.

I attended the launch and have just published by report on the Africa twin launch here: http://www.wheels24.co.za/BikesQuads/honda-crf1000l-africa-twin-return-of-a-legend-20151202

I will try to check back frequently to answer any questions you may have.
Appreciate your participation Dries - and enjoyed your report. We've been anxiously waiting for real riders to put the AT though it's paces and finally are seeing it happen. May I suggest you start a new thread indicating your affiliation and willingness to answer questions - eg: "Wheels24 test rider open to AT questions". I think you will have a lot of takers.

Thanks for your feedback. Nice. Happy and lucky guy apparently :wink2:

Now we need to wait and wait and wait :crying:

Has anyone found a review of the South Africa launch showing video taken with an onboard camera (GO-PRO) by the reviewer? Especially the off-road sections, to get a sense of how difficult the terrain would be if we were riding - if not how difficult it was for the test riders (several of whom conceded they aren't expert off road riders). Such videos are almost always part of street bike reviews (including time on the track), and are very useful in gauging the capability of the bike.

EDIT: Just saw the VisorDown POV ride footage posted by Nessuno - would like to see more, of more challenging terrain.

Quick note on the non-english reviews. Most of them will allow you to change the subtitles to the language of your choice.

The french review gets a little bit poetic and philosophical thanks to the translation but you get the gist.

2 new french video

Second day: off road

It's a fun bike!
My hands and forearms are (sympathetically) aching for just watching the rider take those rocky sections of road at 30-35 mph(?). The fact he was able to hold a microphone and speak coherently (I don't understand French so I'm guessing it was coherent) after that suggests Honda got the suspension right. Good stuff.

Now that is a good observation, now we just need someone to ride around New York City and try that, it's the ultimate test :D

The Bike Show did post their review of the Africa Twin launch https://youtu.be/d4EEe6S-530 with a bit more "production value" (mixing in Honda's video of Marc Marquez & Joan Barreda with that of Bike Show's Donovan Fourie ) than other reviews. A good thing, considering Donovan's admitted skill limitations. And no, they did not respond to my inquires - apparently having more to do than bother with "fan services".
