AT DCT 2017 start issue

Hi everybody!

Today when trying to start my AT, I found out it wont. I turn the key, press start switch but engine won't turn on. Neutral indicator turns into a "-" and TC indicator blinks. Theres also a noise, pump noise? Already checked battery and sidestand/center stand, but bike wont start.

Hope you guys can help me.

Hi Melvin, and welcome.

Sorry to hear you're struggling this morning. What year AT? I had a 2016 which went back twice for dodgy switchgear - the starter switch would short and leave me stranded. The fix for me was new switchgear, although my dealer was pretty good about replacing for free.

Are the lights on and shining bright? The noise is probably the fuel pump. Try a quick call to your dealer's service desk to see if they can advise?

There are people on here who are significantly more technically gifted than me so I'll let them weigh in with real advice. Hope it's something more obvious as it wasn't an easy fix in my case!

Sorry - just noticed it's a 2017. That's the same model as mine was so it could be the switchgear issue....

All lights work properly, already contacted dealer, waiting for response. Posted here to let everyone know, and if lucky, find a solution.

In the short term, and also mentioned somewhere in the Forum, did you turn off the ignition while in gear?

If so, consider rocking the AT back and forth while the gear indicator is in " - " and see if neutral ("N") appears. Maybe it is stuck in between "N" and 1st or 2nd gear?

Bike was in neutral, I'm always careful with that. Anyway, i read that DCT can start on a gear, don't know if true. Display shows "N" at gear indicator when turning the key, it becomes a "-" just while pressing start switch, when released, shows "N" again. I guess i could try that back and forth thing anyway.

Ah, okay. Interesting. Please share with the Forum on what you ultimately determine the cause to be, and/or the workaround.

Just had the same thing on my 2017. Lights came on, indicated "1" for gear, went to "-" after 9 seconds. Nothing when hitting the start button.

Checked the battery, it was at 11.5 v. Put it on a charger overnight, it came up to about 11.8 v.

Battery did not have enough juice to let the DCT shift to a known state of Neutral, so starter would not engage.

Replaced battery, all is well.

These batteries seem to give little to no warning before dying.

Thanks Beowulf for confirming that. Hopefully Melvin that is all it is.

Sounds like another reason to consider an instrument cluster "voltage gauge" to help [maybe] hedge against a surprise in the case of the weak battery.

i had similar issue 2 weeks ago on my 2017 DCT .. turned ignition on .. lights on dash came on fuel pump all normal etc etc ... pressed start button ... just click click click... as above a mate suggested charging battery ... i thought odd as i had just completed 450 mile trip ... hey presto started first time after 1 day fully charging .. took that as a warning and just bought a new battery .. all seems 100%

I tried that back and forth thing with any hope, because I think the bike isn't stuck in a gear, but worth trying. Still have the problem. Decided to take the battery out again, since I don't have a spare one to test, checked the one on the bike once again. Voltage is fine, 50% charge, I fully charge it and try again. No changes. Took out the fuses, none of them is broken.

Meanwhile, Honda has given me another phone number to call. I'll keep you all updated.

Sadly, bike will stay in the garage until dealers are allow to open again. All Honda can say is that the issue is probably due to an electric error, they don't know if a sensor, a cable or what. I rather not touching anything to avoid voiding the warranty. "Luckly" I don't need to use the bike this days.

That is unfortunate Melvin. While it is sitting there, and if you have the time, closely review all wires and connectors (again). If it is electrical, you might be able to find it and maybe it is something really simple like a loose connector (wouldn't that be a treat?).

Hi Melvin,

I am still suspicious of the battery, itself. Do you have a way to connect for jumping from a car battery? Might be worth testing.

Connections, of course, especially the ground connection...

It's the battery. My '17 did the exact same thing. Take it off, get it tested, and order the replacement. It had me scratching my head too. Crap OEM batteries.
