This is a recent ride to the Altiplano del desierto de Atacama in Chile. We did about 3000kms in 8 days of riding. Plus 1000km each way, towing the bikes, just to get to Antofagasta. Begun with a surprise. It’s said to be the driest desert in the world and it was snowing!! First time in my life I’ve even heard of it happening! Happily this was the part done by car.
Day 1 Antofagasta to Iquique 417 km on paved road, by the seashore. Nice and easy. Hot, but not so bad during the day (winter here in the south hemisphere), minus cero Celsius at nights in the desert and highlands.
Day 2 Iquique to Codpa 400km, paved road, Carretera Panamericana and then mostly deserted roads to the interior valleys. Great.
Day 3 Codpa to Putre and Lago Chungara 290km, wonderfully mostly deserted interior roads to the Andes Highlands.

Day 5 460 km back south on our way to Ollague, next goal of this trip.

Day 6 La Huayca (Pica) to Ollague by Salar de Huasco (salt flats). 211 km, paved and dirt roads. The last part of it kind of hard. Some sandy parts, 2 of us 3 dropped the bike, other section very rocky and irregular surface and at well over 4000 meters (>13000 feet) is not easy peasy to man this beasts. But absolutely awesome landscapes, and the deafening silence when you stop…

Day 7 Ollague to San Pedro de Atacama. 460 km. More awesomeness Paved and dirt roads. Have to go back 70 km because the road become very bad and we were tired. As said, is not fun to get up a fully loaded adventure beast at well over 4000mts

Day 8 San Pedro de Atacama to Antofagasta by the Salar de Atacama, 380km. Have to repair a sharp rock front tire puncture from previous day (Many thanks to the mighty green Slime who saved the day and got me to San Pedro in one piece). Across the Salar de Atacama is one of the largest lithium extraction sites of the world. Supposedly to save the world from climate dammation, for the batteries of electric vehicles and stuff. Have to ask the local flamingos and scarce original inhabitants there, if they feel the same.

Very nice set of posts @Ponzan. I'd love to do some riding down that way.

Your note about being tired at 4k m altitude wrestling with these big bikes on unimproved roads brought back memories of a trip over Ophir Pass last year.

Maybe you can post your path using Google?
