BDR Tires

What style of tire do you use for BDR...

Watched a ton of tire videos and replaced my Trail Max Missions with another set. Seem pretty road biased and mostly that is what I do ride.

Now after digging in pretty easily on any off-hwy terrain that isn't hard pack, I am rethinking what is necessary for the BDR riding.

Watched several BDR videos and looks like every bike is running some version of a "Knobby" full off-road tire on front and rear. The CA, AZ, and NV routes look to be better suited for a dual-sport bike like an XR or a DR than the AT.

I did the Nor Cal BRD last year with knobby tires and glad I did for much better traction. You usually are only on the street for small sections and like @dallas said why risk it. My normal riding is all street with a good amount of freeway so I took off the knobby and put on street tires which handle much better and next year when I go do another BRD I'll put the knobbies on again as they have lots of life still in them. Use the BRD site to read up on the route and suggestions it is very helpful. The Nor Cal is easier for a bigger bike than the So Cal, NV and AZ routes I believe.

As someone who bought their AT for the purpose of riding BDRs (and who bought a dirt bike for the purpose of training to better ride off-road), I hate the idea of having to buy a 3rd bike. I ran the SD-BDR-X on Pierelli STR Rally tires (70/30), but the conditions were perfect.

I agree with you on knobies. The AX41s or Trailmax Raids interest me. Likely the AX41s because I can install them myself.

AX41s are good on the road and on trails, especially dry and stony surfaces. Any looseness on the road is easily dealt with by the AT traction control. They do fill with mud if it is thick sticky clay, but then clear quickly once out of the mud. Prolonged stretched of mud might be a problem.

Here's a fairly new tyre, with deep tread, after coming through a muddy trail in South Warwickshire, England.
