The Carplay function works well you will need a long usb lighting cable. This cable has to be orignal or from a certified supplier otherwise it will not work. Also you need to connect a Bluetooth headset to your Honda screen. If have a cheap one from dimton the BlueRider M1-S.
I found a solution to make it wireless with a Bluetooth to wifi adapter. I bought it from https://carplay2air.com an adapter which us the Bluetooth and wifi it is working. The only thing you need to care about it that with the wireless solution you need to also take of your battery life fro your Iphone.
Then we come to the navigation apps there a only a couple who support carplay on this moment. I was looking for an app with offline maps, gpx import and also working offroad. But this is not so easy. I like to use Scenic but it is not yet approved for Carplay by Apple. If here is a biker who works for Apple may be you can help Scenic.
Then the question do you need Carplay? If you have a good nav system then not but if you don’t have it Carplay is a good solution in combination with offline maps and you get lot of additional features.

My concern with that whole set up would be cell service, well at lest when talking about navigating, I go to places where there is absolutely no service at all. So as a result, I never use my phone as a nav. aide.... I kinda wish Honda would of at least offered onboard GPS navigation, tho I do love the Apple car play, for the other features, just not for navigation.

I know but this app is not what I want. No direct import of tracks. If someone send you by mail a gpx file to your iphone then you would direcly open it with your nav app and not going to a site or pc to import it then tranfer it to your phone.

If you don’t have cell service with a Iphone your navigation with offline maps will work because it has a internal GPS.
Also I know there more inside the Honda electronics because in my manual is mentioned that some data will be send to Honda.

Normally the iPhone just occasionally uses the GPS to help with positioning from pinging the cell towers it is not always active because of decreased battery life..

WOW They finally fixed that and now the map is stored in the phone’s memory and it pulled from there, it used to be pulled off the internet so you used to have to have cell service for maps to work... But admittedly I haven’t used my phone for navigation in years, first because of the way it used to work and secondly because I got a nice GPS and great detailed old school paper maps.
Tho I am curious how well it will work..
@ Smitf Have you used the iPhones maps in a area without cell service?

I believe that the current gps chipset is not using A-GPS. If you remove your simcard you still can use navigation.

I have CarPlay on an aftermarket Alpine Headunit in my car and in general use it works fine however a recent trip to a senic area I found I was unable to get it to navigate a new route as I had no cell connection on the iPhone. The maps displayed ok but navigation/routing wasn't available until the phone picked up a mast, so anyone planning to use carplay as a navigation tool out of areas of sparse or no cell coverage may find they need to resort to other methods to work out their route . Note it seems to navigate ok into such poor coverage areas as the route calculation is done whilst in an area of cell coverage, or at least that was the case in my limited experience of this "feature".

I'm an Android user, for me navigation is easy with or without cell service. With - Google Maps, Waze, etc. Without - Mapfactor Navigator, Here WeGo, Maps.Me and also Google Maps with the route previously cached.

With Apple do you guys not have the option of using any apps that use a downloaded map? Is off-line navigation only a thing in the Android ecosystem?

iOS and downloaded map content

Yes, google maps will allow you to download maps on iPhones.

Also, there are other apps that allow you to download what you need ahead of time. For example, I use RideWithGPS. However, RWG doesn’t adjust when you diverge from the route. Used to use TomTom and download the entire US. etc.

KiwiMark,

With Iphone it is same as with android your load all maps on your phone and with offline I mean using these cards. The problem with the current apps that they not support import a route directly on your phone and the only one I found Scenic is not supporting Carplay because Is is not yet approved by Apple. May if everybody is downloading it and give it a 5 star rating then may be it will.

Guys, I have Car Play in my tin box and it frustrates me..... Yes it has lots of functions to play with, but I find myself having to take my eye of the road to use it...... think I may end up in a ditch or worse if it were fitted to my bike....

As a dinosaur, I'm not sure I need or want all this. My 2018 model AT display gives me everything I need. My full attention when riding needs to be somewhere (preferable up the road or round the bend) other than the lovely colour screen. As I say, I am a bit of an oddball and have finally ditched my constantly flat fashion statement (iPhone) and bought something with a decent battery.

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been looking for a wireless solution for the CarPlay in my Ram 1500, and for the Africa Twin (when it is released in the US next March).

Yes, the truck is barely drivable in San Francisco — I can only imagine trying to navigate the older cities of Europe.

Today i connected my wireless dongle using and usb 3.0 cable from the usb port going under the seat .(clean solution)
Unluckily the dongle from Carplay2air never arrived , no answer since weeks about , he just stole my money .... so keep your finger away , cannot recommend Carplay2air as it´s turned for me and other buyers just a scam !!!!

Bought this one on Ebay https://www.ebay.de/itm/Carlinkit-Wireless-Bluetooth-CarPlay-Converter-Activator-Car-Smartlink-Adapter/392484599422?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

This is the original one , Carplay2air it´s a copy or even the same rebranded item

carlinkit it´s cheap and in 4 days arrived !

Work like a charm also in my Goldwing !!!
