Hello,

I ordered a 2016 Africa Twin at the Toronto Motorcycle Show about a month
ago and the delivery is supposed to be late June or July 2016. I'm wondering if anybody has heard of someone putting a full exhaust on the Africa Twin and
doing a dyno tune on one. I'm wondering if this engine is detuned to meet EU
A2 license requirements and if so what kind of horsepower and torque it can make with a sharpened tune. I'm sure it will be fine the way it is but I would like to see what I can get out of it with Dyno Jet type tuner and a better exhaust like the Termignoni complete system with no cat. Could be interesting....and fun.
I currently ride an 07 CBR1000RR with 170 hp. so I thought 94 hp. with 500+
lbs of weight might be a bit docile, but probably very appropriate for it's purpose.

That's great to know, I can't wait to get mine. I just bought a 4k Go Pro type camera to film some of the trips and off road adventures. My buddy and I both bought the bikes at the Toronto Motorcycle Show. I'm really impressed with the off road capabilities of this bike and it sounds like it's a very comfortable bike too. I doubt whether I'll do that much off road riding, but it will be great when I come to a dirt road and I can ride on it instead of turning around. We both bought the DCT models mainly because of how great they are when you're off road. I think there's a lot to be said for the additional focus you can put on steering and riding the bike without worrying about shifting or stalling the bike on a hill.
Can't wait...............:)

True Ad Venture,

Thanks, I'm really looking forward to riding it. Should be a lot of fun with the DCT, it will be fabulous when riding dirt roads on the pegs,...... you're still able shift gears. I'm hoping I can get a bit more torque and HP with a full exhaust and dyno tune. I'm sure it's fine just the way it is, but I loved the sound of the AT with the full Termignoni system on it. With a full system like that increasing it's breathing I'm sure it will need a little more fuel which will add a bit more power. How much, who knows? I keep watching to see if anybody tries an exhaust and tune to see what happens.....{:)

Hi Aussie Twin,

I agree, and you're absolutely right. What I had really intended on doing is using my hydraulic tube bender to make a custom stainless steel exhaust and muffler. All the parts are available to make the muffler and they're really not rocket science and ridiculously overpriced. I bought the tube bender to make the roll cage and headers for my race car, so I thought I would make a full race exhaust for it which I would get lots of enjoyment from, especially at the price..I'm also thinking about making some 4130 Cr/Mo crash bars with the bender, as well. I'll get lot's enjoyment out of that aspect of owning the Africa Twin, as well.
I agree, it's not going to be a race bike but I love the sound of the Termignoni system on the bike, but I'm not interested in paying $2500.-$3000. for one, so I'll just make a set by basically copying one. I can use the stock exhaust for the fit......:) Should be fun

Lowcruzr,

Which track will you go to. Come to Cayuga and we can race...lol. You strap down the
front end and put lowering links on the rear suspension and you can launch it without wheeling,
Makes a huge difference to your e.t. I saw a stock R6 go 9's by using this method and
without it....11's. Is yours a DCT or a manual transmission bike....

The lowering straps on the front and the lowering links on the back aren't only a performance
adder, it's also a safety mod. It keeps you from ending up on your ass in front of the audience....LOL. Just kidding but it always you to launch a bike with lots of torque without
doing a wheelie and turning a 14:00 second e.t. I'm actually surprised the rider got hurt,
that should have made for a nice slide as long as you didn't hit the fence....Ouch!
Looking forward to hearing how you make out. I keep threatening to do it with my CBR1000RR. I would imagine it would get into the 8's.

Modern Technology

http://empiredragway.com/index.html

Yes, old trick, however, I saw a guy have a strap break mid track and pop his front end up. He left in an ambulance. I'm not looking to make it any faster than it is. I always run my bikes bone stock, sans lowering, exhaust, intakes, etc. I just like the fun of being at the track with good people.

I wasn't fast enough to order one here so I'll be waiting for quite some time at this point. I'm still up in the air about which trans to get. I don't think I'm ready for modern technology. :grin2:

Hi Lowcruzr,

My friend and I bought the DCT models because of the ability to shift the transmission while standing on the pegs, it would be impossible to do that on a standard. Plus you're always in gear and it won't stall on a hill or steep incline and leave you in a very awkward position to get out of. Should be a
lot of fun. In reality I always clutchless shift my upshifts on the other bikes trying to simulate a quick shifter, so now I'll have one .....kind of :grin2:

Personally, I wouldn't do it with out having the ability to adjust the air/fuel ratio....I'm sure those motors aren't cheap. If you modify it to get more air in or out, it would be very easy for the engine to get dangerously lean. It's not worth the risk, a slip on ok but I wouldn't do a full race system with no cat with out the adjustability of the air fuel ratio....It's not worth the risk
in my mind......EZ {:)

For what it's worth...I've just stepped off a 2014 Hyperstrada that has the same power and torque figures as the AT.

I've only travelled 840 klms on the AT but about 80 of these have been in the twisties. I found that I was travelling at about the same pace as I was on the Duc....greatest limitation is tyre grip....especially at the front. My sense is that the front tyre is not bighting in as hard as you would want (this is an easy fix). But it is easy to string together a series of corners. The bike simply goes where you look.

My AT was not purchased to race but to do lots of miles and over some of those back roads we get here in Australia....none the less the AT is pretty capable in most areas (in my view) and look at the video 'The Crumble' posted he also tells a very similar story.

I have seen some after market exhausts...they show torque improvements of 5% and if you got that in power by flashing the ecu, would the cost be justified? It's real easy to spend a lot of money for little in the way of usable power.... I'd rather spend the dollars on a better helmet and bags. Most of us...and especially me...will never see the bike real limits...but it will be fun exploring!!

Hi Aussie Twin,

Do you think the lack of traction/grip on the corners is from the tiny footprint on the road from such a skinny tire, tire compound or needs some front suspension adjustments......or all of the above....LOL It is a pretty skinny tire, for sure!
