Hi All, i am preparing my bike for a road trip to Norway this Summer and slowly going through my checkist. I was cleaning the wheel last weekend and noticed the wheel is slightly out of true by maybe 3mm on the right side. Ive never had spoked wheels before so wanted to check do i tighten the left side to bring it into center or do i loosen the right side? How would I know in which direction i go? From the looks of it, i may need to adjust 4 or 5 spokes.

Ah the “Magic” of truing a wheel. I would watch a few YouTube videos on it (There are some great ones) and try and learn that way. For me it is one of those things that I have never been able to grasp fully. Been able to do it… but it does not come naturally to me like most other mechanical things do. I have friends that seem like wizards at it…. So tend to bring some beer and have them “show me” how to do it. Goes quicker, I don’t make things worse and I get to learn. For a 3mm run-out, you may want some help the first time around so that you don’t do what I would do (Make it worse LOL)
Good luck.

The most important thing to note when truing a wheel is to not try and pull or force the rim true by just tightening spokes. Loosen the spokes first on the opposite side before tightening to bring the rim straight. Looking at the angle of the spokes from the hub will tell you which way the rim will move when loosening the spokes. After getting the rim true then you can tighten each spoke all around from a known starting point and exact amount of turns to bring the spokes tight. You develop a feel for it after a while, I've built hundreds of wheels over the years. Watching some online videos is a good idea.
