I mounted the heavier Hyperpro shock spring today. Not too bad a job. I used two ratchet straps to compress the spring, which was a lot easier than I thought. Here are a few things I learned through a bit of trial and error...


  • Though the shop manual doesn't mention it, you may need to remove the rear wheel in order to raise the swingarm high enough to remove the shock.
  • Prior to both removal and install, screw the preload adjuster all the way in to shorten the arm as much as possible, but back it all the way off when you go to compress and remove the spring.
  • The ends of the spring are different diameters, so make sure you don't put it on upside down...I forgot about that!
  • Use a strap to hold the swingarm up when you do the removal and install. If you can adjust the height up and down as you're manipulating the shock and linkage, that helps a lot. I used a ratchet strap.
  • Take your time removing the shock. It will come out, but it takes a little bit of wiggling, kind of like a fat guy getting into a Miata.

Taking breaks to swear a bit, replenish my fluids and stretch out the odd cramp, it took me a little over an hour. I give it a 2 out of 5 wrench difficulty rating...SC

There are some posts on this, search Removing the Rear Shock I managed to do it without removing the rear wheel. It also helps a little to remove the preload adjuster knob, just gives you a little more clearance.

It's also good practice when doing rear shock/linkage work to lightly snug everything, then put the weight of the bike back on it before final tightening

I have since seen a few videos of people doing it with the rear wheel on, but they sure struggled quite a bit. With the wheel removed, I was able to lay under the bike and move the swingarm with one hand while I manipulated the shock into place with the other. Sure it's an extra "unnecessary" step, but I was glad I did it. I thought about removing the preload knob, but found that just screwing it all the way in gave me plenty of room...SC

Hi,

When you mounted the shock, did it come with the Hydraulic Preload Adjuster? Apparently it's an option. Is it hard to adjust manually? Do you need any tools for adjusting the preload?

I don't believe he bought a Hyperpro shock. He just swapped out the OEM spring.

I was wondering if I shouldn't just remove the spring from the Hyperpro 460 shock I just ordered and have it installed on the OEM Showa shock. The OEM shock comes with compression and rebound damping adjusters, while the Hyperpro 460 comes only with rebound damping adjustment.
But if I do that, will the valving of the OEM shock support the stronger spring?

I'm not sure I would do that and you may find it does not fit anyway, you are just creating work for yourself here and there is great potential for a real nightmare outcome. Either fit the new HyperPro shock as is or just change the spring (to suit you) on the OEM shock with a Hyperpro (or other) spring to your requirement. On a bike with so much suspension travel a remote pre-load adjuster is a must if you regularly change your load.

I agree with Eltel62. You may be creating a bit of a nightmare for yourself and I am not sure if the spring used with the 460 is the same as the one supplied with the 'kit' for only changing the spring only on the rear. If I were you I would contact Hyperpro first and get more information from them. I found them very helpful.

I managed to finally get my Hyperpro kit last week and fitted them over the weekend. I went for a ride yesterday, and I can tell you it was money VERY well spent. I want to get the setup near 100% for tar riding before making changes for the dirt.

I took my time with the job and it went better than expected. I tackled the front suspension first, and deviated from the installation process in one step, but I am still very happy with the outcome. Removing the rear shock was more difficult that what I expected. I could undo the shock but I could not get it dropped out between the coolant container and the rear of the swing arm!! Eventually I removed the swing arm bolt and moved the swing arm back a bit. This allowed the shock to drop out easier. Removing the swing arm bolt was not difficult and ended being a good idea because it needed grease. There was corrosion starting to form on the surface of the bolt!

I am very happy with the front suspension and the rear still needs a bit of tuning. The reason why I say that is because I get 55mm static sag and the book says it should be between 30 and 40mm. Even with this variance, the bike feels completely different, in a positive way.

I also fitted a new E07 on the rear and TKC knobbly on the front. This raises the bike up already. Then the Hyperpro lifts is up a bit more. This might have created a potential problem for me because my seat is already in the low position. To compensate for this a bit, when I fitted the forks I let then come through the clamps by 12mm.

Guys,

Thanks for your replies. I guess you are right. I just sent an email to the shop where I ordered the shock to try and change it to just the rear and fork springs. Like that I can still have all the adjustments from the stock shock.

And most importantly, I just spoke with a local suspension specialist who will help me setup the whole thing once the springs arrive.
