Muffler heat and OEM poly luggage?

877 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  irsh
I just piked up a set of the OEM polypropylene panniers and once mounted the right side box is less than an inch away from the Akra muffler. It looks like melted plastic waiting to happen. I've been looking at some 12" x 24" adhesive backed aluminized sheet on Amazon.
Am I on track, or is the heat not actually an issue?

They are fine with the oem silencer and also with the SC Project I now have. Not sure exactly how close they are with either but it is probably not much more than an inch. Will see if I can find a picture.

This is the only one I could find.

Be careful with that number plate Hood. On British roads you can be halted by a policeman for incorrect display. I'd change it for one without all those scratches on it if I were you.

@irsh I had the same issue when I went touring last year, previously I had the stock can/muffler and clearance wasn’t much of an issue. However, I had fitted a Termignoni Can and this time it was very very close.

My resolution was threefold;

1 - I loosened the clamp/jubilee clip on the header and rotated the muffler clockwise, this twisting it inwards. I had notice it was marginally flared out which must of happened during fitting. It now hangs plumb line with the bike.
2 - I fitted some heat tape to the pannier so that if the exhaust did touch then it touched that first and not plastic. Plus, it made for better heat dissipation and a cooler pannier.
3 - I fitted a rubber muffler protector (like you get on MX bikes) which acted as another barrier just in case of contact again.

I dont have a pic of the full set up but this first one if of the muffler protector and the last ofhow close it was before I made the changes. I now have a bigger gap (poss 20mm) but that also includes the protector and a fully ladened pannier.

Worth noting, mine is a 1000 but I think the principles are the same?
Oh, and I’ve found a photo of the finished look….

Just taken a pic of the pannier with the SC Project exhaust, approx 3/4" clearance at its tightest and no issues.

I will loosen the Akra up a bit and see if I can shift it inward and widen the gap from the current half inch or so. The heat reflective sheet couldn't hurt, so I'll do that as well.
Thanks guys!

I've been researching a set of these panniers for my 2019 standard AT. This information may be useless to you but I noticed that there is a thick rubber spacer that goes onto the upper prong of the rear footpeg mounts on both sides. May be just for my bike but without them the panniers sit too close to bike, are too loose, and in some cases (excuse the pun) won't lock. Didn't see them offered with the panniers but as a fitting part from Fowlers at £7.99 a pop.

I can confirm this is true, you need those rubber mounts for the pillion pegs (for OEM wrackless), and they are purchased separately of you don’t buy a “Honda package”

I did indeed get the rubber peg sleeves with the luggage. I think perhaps the Akra muffler just has some adjustability that I didn't think about during install since I didn't have the luggage at the time.
