Oh, and you'll find no shortage of suggestions on tires. Best suggestion I can give is to be a bit sceptical about the road/offroad ratings quoted by the tire manufacturers. Some say (heh) if you ride 90% road & 10% off road then you should get tires rated at 90-10. To me that only makes sense if you can live with the compromises that brings - for the 10% of the time you are riding off road, your tires will be rubbish. I use the road-offroad ratings given by the manufacturers as a relative importance figure, not time spent on road and off road. As a result, I use big block tires that are rated as something like 20-80 even though the majority of the time I will be on road. The performance off road is important enough to me (even though it doesn't happen much) that I will live with the shorter life and lower road grip when I'm on a sealed road.
