Oil consumption - 2022 CRF1100 ATAS

Hello!

In September I acquired a new 2022 Africa Twin Adventure Sports, at the moment it has 6800km and has a very high oil consumption.
Has anyone gone through the same?

My dealer reported it to honda they know the problem but have no solution, they say it is under study.

982km- first oil change
2600km - add 600ml
3950km - add 200ml
4950km - add 100ml
6400km - add 200ml
...........

Everything is done at the dealership, and reported to Honda.

I saw situations that stopped consuming, but I'm not confident.

Thanks.

I would want the engine fixed no matter what. The thinner oil will disappear quicker, let them use it. There have been a rash of oil burners since they changed to the 1100 from 1000. If I recall they are using a hardened aluminum block with no sleeve. There will be no fix, just a replacement.
This is true.

I wonder if some oddball "engine break-in" condition prematurely started the cylinder wall scoring.

It would be nice to understand this from Honda, if that is the case.

A quick search

I think it is Nikasil or similar the bores are coated with. It can be redone but whether it would be more cost effective to just replace the top crankcase/cylinders or recoat I have no idea.

My dealer puts in 10w-40 as standard or so they said.

Same here: 10W40, until I changed to 5W40 (synthetic) for an enhanced Canadian winter riding experience.

That would be... Florida vacation?

I very much doubt if parting company with Honda's re-branded engine oil offerings would invalidate any warranty. For my two penn'orth here in the UK and the more western parts of Europe a 10W/40 engine oil is better suited to the local climate regardless of what Honda recommends in their latest series of Owners Manuals. A 10W/30 grade may be too thin at times when the average temperatures are approaching or exceeding 30°C (86°F). For what its worth in an earlier series of Owners Manual Honda are recommending either a 10W/30 or a 10W/40 depending on the average temperature in your riding area.

An interesting rebuttal to the "just do what the engineers recommend" philosophy.

Consumers rarely get to hear directly from engineers. What appears in the owner's manual is a dumbed-down version of actual engineering requirements, written by technical writers and lawyers for average regional riding conditions by the average rider with a below-average IQ.

Key takeaways:

  • Feel free to switch viscosity within reason, especially when warranty is no longer a concern. Your bike will not blow up, in fact it probably won't even notice.
  • Don't use energy-conserving oil, canola oil, corn oil, grapefruit juice or Bud Lite.

Some of us might not like the above statement, some of us won't even notice it.

(grunt) Yeah, maybe.
Update,
My good friend that bought CRF1100L ADV Sports same time as me,they were delivered within a week.
He has 6000km on the odo. Today he took to a dealer for inspection and reported excessive oil consumption.
Dealer also want to inspect the engine.
I was also at the dealer and there were three more CRFs 1100.
What is interesting I've put my finger in the exhausts and beside carbon deposit there was oil. Very grease black stuff.
On two out of three there was grease black stuff in the exhaust. One looked clean, there was black stuff but not as greasy as other two. Mine is the same. Like oil is comming out of the exhaust.

You should check yours and see if there is a connection between black grease in the exhaust and excessive oil burning.

No offense was intended. Just describing how manuals are written for the general public.

I also have a 2022 Africa twin Adventure sports and I am burning atleast 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles. just recently it has been getting a lot worse, the dealer is going to inspect the engine within the next few weeks. After owning a 2019 for years and no issues I am soooo angry at honda that they are keeping this issue hush hush.....
There was an oil thread of sorts on the NT1100 forum where a Honda dealer is reported to have recommended a 10W-50 engine oil "to be on the safe side" link here. On the safe side of what is unclear, however, I wonder if recommending a thicker oil has anything to do with attempting to rectify the higher than expected oil consumption while ignoring any potential longer term effects of using an unsuitable engine oil that is too thick for the application?
I suppose it could always be worse:

I bet this baby would look really good in Honda Matt black sparkly enamel.

Same here, completely black exhaust.

Oil consumption seem stopped since i ride it faster than usual one day 1500 Km ago (4100 now).

I'll re-check in 500 Km and keep you updated.

i Had a problem with synthetic oil disappearing on my last ride. Switched back to Dino oil and problems solved. You guys might want try something different. I’m sure there are a few bad eggs in the basket though
Update:
Dealer just called me they have incpected the cylinder sleeves and damage to cylinder is visible. There are visible scores vertical on the sleeve in direction of piston travel.

On other thread someone posted pictures it looks the same.

They have contaced Honda Europe and now we wait for the asnwer.

I expect nothing less than a new engine at least.

From 1000km my dealer put 10w40, at 6500km I changed to Motul 7100 10w30.
It has 8000km now and the level has gone down very little or nothing at all.
I'll drive until 9000km to see how it behaves and I'll report the situation.

Next week i will travel to Peaks of Europe with oil in pannier for safe.

I'm afraid of having the cylinders scratched too.
Does anyone know how to contact Honda Europe office directly?
Email, phone, website?

I can't find anything on the internet.
It seems like they do not want consumers to be able to write them directly.
I don't trust my dealer, they try to prolong as much as they can so waranty runs out.

Then want to replace a crank case, which is unacceptable for me. I don't trust that they know what they are doing.
But they told me they can't orded the crank case at all from their Honda spare parts system.

Thank you very much.
From this it seems Honda Europe is in the UK,

This is plain B.S.
How a dealer can't order spare parts???
That's why they are dealer. to support sales and aftersales service, maintenance and spare parts!
