Put a deposit down on a Standard 23 AT....but now having second thoughts!

After selling my 800 Tiger earlier this year, I was really looking forward to get a Standard AT.

The problem started when I was trying to decide on the color. It may be just me, but I found the white/blue Tricolor and the Grand Prix red a bit too colorful, for the lack of a better word. The most 'colorful' they have been from 2016 up to now. So I decided on the Matte Ballistic Black.

I am now really having serious second thoughts about the color scheme. I am feeling that in a few years down the road, the black will not look so good. When I see videos of classic 90's ATs they seldom show black ones. Also the matte black, this year, has zero highlights, like at least gold forks and/or wheels and maybe the reason why it does not pop at all.

I have also read that pressure washers (my favorite way to wash a bike) and matte paint don't go well together.

Placed my order beginning this month and waiting time is around 8 months so might be still in time to change my order! I am thinking of going to the dealership and ask for 'Glint Wave Blue Metallic'.

What say you?! Also, as important is the 2023 white frame paint prone to cracking/rusting?

It is an amusing thread.....rufty tufty adventure bike riders whittering on about polish and shiny shiny.
Ha,ha true, but the important thing is to project the image to the World (well mostly to impress the general public that knows s#it about bikes); "Hi everybody, look at me I'm ready to conquer Patagonia all the Kazakhstan's and Mongolia's on my Super-duper ADV motorcycle" ...middle aged couples walking by, and you can "hear" the wives thinking; "wish my hubby is such a tough and macho man living dangerously " .............

... I've been told the Honda Matt black sparkly ultra low maintenance finish is sexier and perhaps cooler ( ) too.
The only way i would chnge colour of mine was if dealer told me you can pick up a white, red, pink, whatever tomorrow 😅

And then promptly trade it in for a matte finish one :)

You ordered in USA?
I was not sure they are taking 2023 orders.. I ordered a 2022 in June 2022 and it was delayed every month until cancelled last month but I found one left at a dealer showroom floor. Local dealer was not sure at that time about 2023 but after last year..... I would not trust Honda's timeline ):

I had a 2018 ATAS and did not like the gold wheels but liked the red/white/blue (anniversay) colors.... the new r/w/b has black wheels that I like.. its all personal preference :)
Order it in Portugal. Hopefully and according to dealer should arrive end of june....order it early april

I'm confused about the Honda "Matte Ballistic Black Metallic" paint, it seems that the finish is actually NOT "True matte paint" ...apparently there is a clearcoat applied over the matte paint? The touchup kit contains the clearcoat finish. Can somebody with some car painting experience chime in and clarify the whole MATTE thing?

Googled:
Do you use clear coat on matte paint?
MYTH #3: Matte paint is just regular paint without a clear coat. Absolutely not. In rare cases, maybe your aftermarket matte paint job has no clear coat, but if you get it from the factory it definitely will.

Can flat paint be clear coated?
Flat paint must also be sprayed with the same techniques as a standard glossy paint. Apply the sealer first, followed by the base coat, and next the clear coat. On big difference is that flat paint requires a low-gloss or a satin-finish clear versus a high-gloss clear that's typically used in a normal paint job.
MATTE PAINT COATING is a ceramic coating that protects matte & satin paint from stains, soiling, and contaminants to preserve the finish in factory condition. Engineered for active hydrophobicity, Matte Paint Coating repels water to self-clean. Unlike other nanocoatings, it retains the matte finish and will not add gloss.

The touchup kit contains the clearcoat finish.

if that's the case then @buddy13 should make another trip to the dealer :)

You see, we have extra paint and all non-flaking :D

Seriously though it is not a dull matte finish like you see on some cars and bikes and it does seem to be very durable.

yeah there seems to be some confusion created by marketing, using words they don't understand :rolleyes:surprised they didn't add "Military grade Ballistic Ultrasonic Matte Black Metallic"
first there was;
  • just "woody look"
  • then just paint,
  • then they added clearcoats,
  • then started adding metallic into the paint
  • then the matte (flat dull)
  • then the whole vinyl wrapping craze
  • then ceramic coatings
  • and it seems the matte can now be clear coated, and still preserve the "flat, satin, dull" look (who knew?)
I bet your Honda "matte" can even be polished and cared by using the "regular car washing / cleaning products"
What does the manual say in that regard?

my Yamaha FJR1300 manual had this:

Whatever you do "Don't buy MATT and don't buy BLACK or Dark GREY with no gold rims or shocks.

You HAVE to buy this chick magnet :
View attachment 82545

Jk,jk of course...buy whatever you like, and don't listen to the AT forum members that made a mistake and bought "black primer only AT's" that look like BBQ's :ROFLMAO:

Matte paint finishes are very sensitive to scratches, even paper towel at the gas station scratched my '17 FJR1300 matte silver, that was my last and only "matt finish" ...they are not terrible, but you can't use "regular" car wash, wax, polishing products.
Matt paint requires different products formulated for matt finishes.
here is some read on matt paint:

How Do You Keep Frozen Paint & Vinyl Matt Surface Finish Clean?

Since my wife put me on a stupid diet, actually that BBQ looks as attractive as a bike to me right now! 🤭
