Hey everyone. My name is Cosmin. I am from Bucharest, Romania. I bought the Africa CRF1000L in june 2016. Since them I made 11.000 km and I enjoyed every one of them. At the link below there is a video from my first roadtrip with the AT on Transalpina, Romania. Sorry that the link is on Facebook and not on YouTube, but in july there will be a biker festival held on Transalpina and I uploaded it there so people from all over the world can see the beauty of that road and region. Hope you guys will enjoy the video and maybe it will make you wanna get on your Africas and visit Romania. It is a very beautiful country with amazing roads and trails through the mountains. Take care and ride safe.

Hi Cosmin, welcome the the AT bandwagon and lots of pleasure to you with yours !

I live in switzerland and have been thinking of doing this road and more in the carpathians, it's so much beautifull and not much trafic there, but a Romanian colleague told me it's not really safe to travel alone, that I would get my Honda stolen most likely, is it really that bad, I'm asking because she lives here since maybe 20 years, so maybe things evolved !?

It is not even close as bad as people think. While it is true that bad stuff happends, there are way to few bad encounters that need to be mentioned. I mean it is not that bad. Of course that, like in any other turistic place, there are gypsies that only think about how to rob you, but that happends everywhere in the world. I have a lot of forein friends who came to ride in Romania and all of them keep returning with more and more riding buddies. I believe that any long motorcycle trip should be with al least two bikes, no mather where you go. On 7th July I will take a weekend trip and ride some trails around Sibiu city with some friends. A polish guy read about it and he booked accomodaitions and he will be joining us with his AT. So, to conclude this, Romania is not bad. Some say it is very ok to ride here, compared with other countries with a camunist background. If you ever get around, give me a message and maybe I will join you on some trips. Cheers.

Thanks for the information, that's great to hear, unfortunately among my biker friends I am the only adventurer, the rest are mainly Sunday drivers as I call them, who only ride on hot sundays, they are too lazy to go outside of switzerland on their 2 wheels.

Likewise if you come through Switzerland, be sure to send me a message as well !

I went to Romania on a Merchant Ship back in the late 80's before the wall came down, I was an Engineering apprentice at the time. We walked everywhere and found the locals wonderful people, never felt threatened. We used to smuggle "western cigarettes" ashore in the collar of our coats and always had a great time in the local bars etc. We werer oblivious to the local curfew though and were arrested by guys in a military uniform with assault rifles and thrown in the local cells. Never really knew if they were police, local militia or army. All pretty good natured though, 40 Benson & Hedges from the coat collar got us out with an escort back to the ship! Bad people everywhere if you look for them.

Hi Cosmin! Welcome to the forum and greetings from Austria. Congrats to your video, it give very good impressions about the Transalpina. Have you been riding the Strategica as well or would this road be not suitable for the AT? Have always a safe ride and always keep the rubber side down. Cheers, gerhard

Next weekend, between 7-10 July, I will go with some friends for a ride near Sibiu city. After you asked about Strategica, I started thinking that it would be great to do it in this trip since is pretty close to Sibiu and we can ride it end to end and be back in Sibiu by nightfall for a cold beer. I will film the trip on my helmet cam and after I edit it I will post it here. Thanks for the great idea ;) Cheers!

Hi Cosmin, visiting Romania as part of a European trip. Any advice on keeping safe and avoiding any possible trouble ? I have been touring Europe with friends for several years but this year I will be solo. I will be going south as far as the Transfagarasan Highway then heading home, plan to be there mid September so hoping it will be open.

Any tips would be great.

Thanks

Hei Clive. I honestly have no ideea what tips I can give apart from telling you a bit of my habbits for when I travel, not only in Romania, but everywhere else. At the accomodation chapter, I book them from Booking.com and look for the ones with a gated yard or private parking. I don't let easy acces luggages on the bike when I visit places, always take the tankbag with me. I have a chain I use when I park the bike. When dealing with the police I never offer bribe and try to be respectful and not to argue with them. If I don't have any accomodation booked, I usually talk to locals and ask them if they know a hotel or a pension around. They are usually very nice people and really try to help. From my experience, when going solo I usualy ask locals about the status of the roads and I avoid going ofroad without suport or backup. In the mountains there are a lot of places without mobile coverage and would hate to be stranded there alone. I think you already knew this stuff, but this is everything I do when I go for a ride no matter what country I visit and I never had any problems. Don't know if this helps but it worked for me so far. Cheers and have a great and safe ride. If you end up in Bucharest, you can give me a message and present you the old part of the city with some nice bars with good food and good beer ;)

Thanks Cosmin, I usually find a hotel and plan my route on one of the websites the night before, priority is always safe parking for my bike. I find most hotels very helpful and have even parked in reception at a couple.

Bucharest is a possibility if I have time, I hear it's a good city to visit and I will be in touch if I visit Bucharest.

I will be using main highways and not off roading, at age 72 my days of doing that are over !!

Please let us know your experience after your ride on the Strategica. Thx. in advance, gerhard
Unfortunatly we didn't ride the Strategica becouse of the rain that fall in the last few days. I don't have much offroad experience and one Africa that was with me had road tires and we didn't want to risk getting stranded up there. But, that road is still on my to do list. Overall, the weekend around Sibiu was a total succes with amazing views and backroads through villages and mountain passes. I will work on the video editing and I will post the movie here so you can see how beautiful Sibiu region in Romania is.

Great video Cosmin! Many thanks! As it looks by now I'll do the Strategica by begin of October. But with my old Dominator NX500 and not with the AT so far. And also not alone as I'll be part of a Touratech Tour for Big Enduros. Hope to have some video material after the tour. Cheers, gerhard
