Hi Bikers ,

the top litlle bar behind the screen of the AT ?:wink2:

I went through all this but wanted the GPS to be on the same plane as the instruments so I cobbled together a bracket with the help of a friend, using aluminium strips and rubber mounts from a bicycle accessory:

It works really well!

That's about what I was thinking of for a GPS mount. Guess I'll have to wait until I get a GPS and see what the standard mounts will let me do.
Used the mill at work to make a satnav bracket.

I have fitted a BMW GPS Mounting BMW R1100, 1150GS & Adv. This unit fits the new Africa Twin brilliantly and is much more secure than the RAM mounts. I found that the RAM mount suffered from too much vibration when off the main roads.

Just what I was looking for!

Ordered one this morning

I just used a standard "mirror stem GPS mount" to mount my Tom Tom, and fits fine. 1400 miles and solid.

Simple clamp

Here is a link to advrider.com showing my much cheaper and easier solution to GPS/Phone mounting.
Zumo center mount with Batzen adjustable screen, RAM and Touratech locking mount

There is a guy on EBay UK advertising a bar mount that goes behind the windscreen they are a very reasonable £25 or use Ram mounts in one of the handlebar bolt holes See telferizer via google.

This weekend I installed the Touratech "above the gauges" GPS mounting bracket for my Garmin 390. I took the bike for a good semi-long test ride (about 120 miles) and noticed a tremendous amount of vibration on the GPS unit. The Touratech mounting bracket for "above the gauges" cantilevers the GPS off the cross member of the AT in order to be able to use the separately sold locking unit. The locking unit takes up more room than the GPS alone and needs to be cantilevered "upward" in order to mount it high enough to see the AT gauges. The position and visibility is fantastic, however, I seriously doubt the AT cross member and/or supports will last long especially when off-road riding and I doubt the GPS will last long either with the vibration.

I have ordered the Touratech "handle bar bracket adapter" which mounts in the middle of the handlebars where there is much less vibration than behind the windscreen. Visibility may suffer some, but that is better than what I suspect the alternative will eventually be!

I also have the Touratech engine guards and fairing guards which fit perfectly and I am very satisfied with the quality and pricing. I think Touratech is a top-notch company to do business with and in no way imply that their above the gauges mounting bracket is shoddy; on the contrary it is well constructed and fits perfectly. It is the AT vibration at the wind screen and bracket that is the issue.

I too was looking for a simple adapter to mount my Zumo on the AT screen bar.
Didn't find anything to my taste, so I designed one for myself and let it be 3D print by an online 3D printing service ("i.materialise.com")
It works perfectly and my gps is now where it should be: just above the panel, on the 13 mm screen bar, without all the complex components from Ram or Touratech.

I made my design available for 3D printing, so anyone who's interested can let it print for himself.
Just look at https://i.materialise.com/shop/item/africa-twin-crf1000-mount-a-garmin-zumo-directly-on-the-rail
I purchased one of your brackets from i.materialise and to be honest I am bitterly disappointed and would not recommend anyone to buy one.

The clamps do not mount securely and are flimsy. Their holes being offset to one side cause them splay out with the tape that is required to fill the gap between them and the tube.

Other viewer please so not waste nearly £30 (delivered) on this clamp.

I.materialise don't seem that interested either.

I think you miss-understand the purpose of i.materialise. They are not selling a product, they are manufacturing a design that may or may not work. It's up to you to work out if it's going to suit your needs or not.

As Alex said in his i.materalise page:

I use 3D printing for my own purposes, but it should be a shame to keep my designs for myself, so... feel free to print any for yourself.
Why don't you download SketchUp and make your own! Or do what I did and use some bits of bent aluminium. :)
JasonWD.

Are you in the business of manufacturing items that are not fit for purpose?

I am an engineer, I could make my own mount and have done in the past. I already have SketchUp and can use it but I don't have access to a 3D printer. Many 3D print companies have a minimum charge of around £40+ so buying something for £30 seemed a good idea.

May I ask what grade aluminium did you use or was it some gash from the scrap bin?

I suppose so long as my post makes other potential purchasers aware that the Alex's GPS mount isn't perfect I'll be happy.

I don't manufacture anything :D

It is exactly that. Works really well, don't you think? It's actually the fixings I was worried about because they are made of some kind of cheese, but they also seemed to last.

That's why we are here. It seemed to work for Alex though.
One possible and cheap solution is Stauff hydraulic pipe clamps.

Just fasten the GPS with the pair of those clamps on the crossbar over the meter. When needed, also the long spacer can be added for getting GPS higher. These clamps are made in black of PA and PP plastic, or aluminium in natural color that is easy to paint in black. Aluminium is light and durable.

The crossbar is about 13 mm, so I'm still considering, wether to order 12,7 mm or 13,5 mm clamp. The first one may need dremeling, the other one some tape around the crossbar. The biggest problem is to find a webshop that delivers only two clamps to consumers. Both sizes are so rare here in Finland, that they are not sold at hydraulic shops here.

I had some RAM hardware kicking around from previous bikes. Really cheap solution and rock solid GPS mount to the crossbar. It places the GPS above and slightly forward of the instruments.
It's RAM B-231-U if you're interested in a cost effective, quick and easy mount.

I've been following Facebook posts from group members. There seems to be some concern about vibration and possibly damaging the welds or subframe from mounting our GPS on the top bar on the windscreen.

So...

I took off my original ones using the RAM B-231-U mount and got an aluminum Base II plate from Gadget Guy GPS Mounts. Looks much more solid and robust to me.

There are always the 'stories' of failure and tales of woe and doom. Has anyone had any issues with mounting their GPS on the top bar?

im looking to mount the BMW Nav V in the Garmin motorcycle mount, i tryed different positions with the Ram mounts tonight, none of them seem to get the GPS in that nice position above and over the dash, this looks like the go!! nice work.
I have a mate with CNC cutting and all the gear, will have to pay him a visit, unless a come across a fancy pipe bracket that already suits.

Cheers
