I finally managed to return to Chehalis Lake after about 15 years. In the meantime (2007) a massive landslide took out the through road and created a tsunami that took out all three rec sites. One user maintained site now sits a few km from the slide. Hiking to the slide along the deactivated road bed covers about 4km of overgrown, rock and tree fall strewn track, until the road disappeares to reveal the 2nd largest recorded landslide in BC history.

Makes sense. Large parts of True Grit were filmed in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. Scenes from the film included locations in Ouray, Ridgeway, Montrose, Gunnison, and Durango.

The shots above are from along the San Juan Skyway CO145 around Cross Mountain, Lizard Head Pass, and Rico.

There is a "True Grit" Cafe in Ridgeway. It has nothing to do with the movie, as it was founded in 1985. But it is a good local "ranch to fork" restaurant worth a stop if you're passing through.

Ridgeway is also home to the "Dennis Weaver Memorial Park" :)
