what's the better bar considering price, functionality, looks, etc...

The Crash Bar Thread!

Ok so I'm in the market for crash bars for my 2022 ATAS ES 1100! At first I was looking at which bars looked better on the bike but now I'm looking for more functionality and protection! Price isn't a factor and I would rather pay for the bars then pay for the bike when I go down! Id like to make this the go to thread for crash bars and will have a poll for you guys to vote on what you think the best bars are. Please give your opinion and any advice you have for some bars. Myself I have been eye balling the sw-motech! they have a full protection package for about 1200 USD. its upper, lower, skid plate. some engine guards! its not the prettiest but it looks very durable! let me know what you guys have or want to get and any advice is appreciated!

if I missed any let me know and I will add them in!!

Thanks guys I'm looking forward to getting some protection on my beast during these colder days in the winter

I'm wondering why nobody uses the honda crash bars (light bar) for the CRF1100? They look good in the photos and seem reasonably priced. Are they weaker?

Two reasons I didn't go with them, well maybe three.
First they are stainless which although good for corrosion resistance don't go too well with a matt black bike.
Second they are not that cheap when compared to the Heed or the AS3P I have used.
Third they won't give the best protection but having said that neither will the AS3P ones I have.

Useful to get to the key differential.

Was on an adventure training course and there was another ATAS there as well. Much better rider than I I might add. We both had a tip-over on a challenging maneuver on dirt where the bike took a full weight drop onto the bars. No problem with my Heed, but he actually had tank damage with the OEM "Light Bar". They are rubber mounted so no damage to the bars, just the tank where the bars flexed into the tank. He also had a moving high-center on his and the Skid plate flexed up on the left side and the edge of it cut the case like a meat cleaver. Not good. I pulled mine right away and replaced with SWM with a cutout for my Heed mounts. Pay me now, or pay me later. I prefer prophylactic action!

SWM is a skidplate?
Anyone have Arrow headers and find bars that fit?
Having read through the whole thread, I have a question: is there an option for the upper bars only? I have the SW Motech skid plate (sans bars) installed and was wondering if anyone makes an upper bar that doesn't rely on the lower bars for mounting. Thanks in advance.

ALT Rider has uppers that don’t require lowers & mids.

Hi.

Could you let me know the impact of mounting crashbars on the overall handling of the bike ?

This is my first trail, coming from sports bike, and I dropped it two times in less than a year. That has never happened to me before.
So, does installing crashbars result in more handling difficulties ? What about the extra weight ?

Thank you all for your advices.
Take care.

I have had two different makes of bars on my 2021 AT', Heed and AS3Performance (CrossPro)
The Heed were steel and weighed a reasonable amount but I liked the design, covered well. The AS3P are aluminium and very light but not as good protection, due to design rather than material.
I never noticed any difference in handling with either and never really noticed any difference in weight either as the AT is well balanced I would say, so weight doesn't show that much.

I now have a 2022 ATAS and I went for the AS3P due to the steel Heed not standing up to the salt air and roads we have here, the AS3P being aluminium stand up well and all brackets and fixings are stainless.

I've been thinking crash bars lately as a spring purchase for my 22 AT Standard. Then stumbled upon this thread. I've decided on the Heed crash bars. But I can't decide if I want the "Basic" Black (fuel tank coverage) or Bunker Black (fuel tank/lower engine coverage)? About an $80 difference. I'm not looking to go crazy off road at my age, but I really like the looks of both. Which would you choose, and why? Thx!

I would choose the Bunker Black instead of the basic ones. Why? The extra protection and the looks maybe.

Finally the first ride after the long winter months.
17700km in two years, new front brake pads replaced, new SW-Motech crash bar and Barkbusters hand protection added. God bless all in the new season! :)

My Heed Bunker Black crash bars arrived today. Amazing, 5 days shipping to Po-Dunk Nowhere, Ohio USA (population 4,000) from Poland. Fricking amazing. UPS came through for once. Can't beat that! Hopefully I'll have them on next week sometime. Better pictures to come.

I was going over the installation directions last night before I went to bed. Heed recommends a two person team for installation. Is this correct? Asking any other Heed owners how there installation went. I do have another local mechanically inclined friend who could help so I'm covered. It does look like another set of hands would be beneficial instead of banging up my tank/engine trying to do it myself alone. Thanks!

Nah! I did it myself, several times... I don't say an extra pair of hands is welcome😁
