Being used to the off-road 'capabilities' of my SD01 Varadero, I was doubting when I bought the bike as well.
But just find some gravel roads, turn the traction control and rear abs off and within a few minutes you're already starting to lock up the rear wheel before the corners and getting the back out on the exit.
I actually missed a corner recently by going way to fast and went straight towards a significant ditch and field. With poo nearly coming out, I braced myself and the suspension saved me beautifully from my own incompetence. I ended up just riding through the field while laughing out loud in my helmet.
It's a cracking bike!
The only problem I have is that I'm ruining the original back tire by sliding around on gravel.
