Thinking of making a top clamp.

I am thinking of making a bridged top clamp for the handlebars for myself and was wondering if there would be any interest?
They would be quite costly, about £80 plus postage costs so maybe too expensive for most people.

They would be made from 6082 aluminium and anodised black then engraved with the Africa Twin logo.
Couple of pics of the 3D model I have done to give an idea of what I mean.

Seems like a good spot for a RAM/Garmin ball mount...
Hi Hood,
What is the purpose of a bridged clamp?
Seems like a good spot for a RAM/Garmin ball mount...
I was actually asked by someone to make something similar a while back but with some sort of star/serration config. That part was not the problem but the clamp was to be all rounded in profile which would have taken a long time to mill for me as I don't have the spindle speed on my mill (it is old ) and thus uneconomical.

Hi Hood,
What is the purpose of a bridged clamp?
It is supposed to add stiffness to the bars, whether that is a good or bad thing I don't know.
I made risers last week which incorporate a bridge but I have only done about 40-50 miles with it in place so far. It did feel a bit nicer than without but that could just have been the placebo effect so time will tell.

Pic of risers I made.

No deposit require, better wait and see if I can make it first :D

Hood, just a suggestion if you don't mind...if you do make these plates, it would be beneficial to include/ install a couple of these RAM ball mounts, like I had on my FJR-1300ES MV Vernolen riser plate

@irsh mentioned that as well, it is not something I would want personally but it would be easy enough to bore/tap a hole in it, would kill the logo though.

I found a piece of aluminium today that was too narrow, only 2" where 60mm is required but as I was needing to test out the mist coolant I made up last week, I thought I would just have a dummy run on the top clamp, it went ok. Well as far as it could being that there was not enough material :D Also never levelled it in the vice before engraving, should have checked but anyway it was just a test so levelled and went over it again, bit of double on some letters but for a real one I will be setting it up correctly.
I will order some material on Monday to make a couple up and see how it goes.

You know better, machining is all Spanish to me :) ...also (if possible) why not make a "Top plate / Riser plate" like one product that can be used as a Plate or Riser, for more versatility ?

As far as Logo, maybe reduce the size a bit, or even better change the lettering to "HOOD" (why not) and that way you can drill the two RAM ball mounts inside the "OO" for symmetry.
That way you won't be spending the rest of your life in prision for "Logo copyright infringement" :ROFLMAO:

Riser/top plate wouldn't really be an option as the holes are too close and thus the bolt heads wouldn't fit. I suppose it could be done by using socket cap screws and recessing part of the round that fits into the bikes own risers but it would look crap I think as the cap screws would only be partially recessed.

I will just claim they are made in China so no copyright rules there :D

This is what it would look like if used as a top clamp (only one cap screw shown)

A few options of RAM ball, you are a bad man @Dado

Diamond mount RAM ball, probably best option due to thickness of the bridge.

Not sure on dimensions of normal RAM ball but should be close.

:ROFLMAO: some bikes start better then others, some bikes need a little push (encouragement) ;)

The Vernolen mount is FJR specific, not sure if AT needs something as elaborate...FJR handlebars are two parts with ability to adjust the Horizontal axis angle.
MV Verholen is a part of MV Motorrad company, one of the executives had a FJR so he designed the plate in BMW facility.

What I really need is a laser, actually no, a fricking laser :D
Would means small logos would be easy and the anodising would be intact as only the dye is vapourised, too bloody expensive though :D

For a cleaner look without the Diamond base, using these, maybe make the bridge a bit thicker

Not sure the AT logos are necessary 🤔

Making it thicker requires more material which means more expense sadly. Also it would really mean new, longer set screws would be required unless of course pockets were cut to accommodate but not sure how that would look.
Anyway looks like I will just be making one or possibly two, I don't need a RAM mount so...

One fitted to my ATAS, note I also have a riser so had to use normal hex head bolts which don't look as good as oem. I have just found a place that sells reduced hex flange head bolts so should look better when I get them :).
