Do the newer bikes have to have the tank loosened/removed? I removed and cleaned air filter on my 17 the other day without touching the gas tank, just the fairing. That would be a real PITA if Honda made that process even more complicated.....

NO but you most probably will have to remove the old filter to take off the Air Cleaner Element cover (Air Box) as shown on a picture above, or to try to replace the old filter element without removing the cover nor the gas tak, using a tool like the ones showed here
