Now I realize that there are those who are entirely happy with the stock suspension and those that will throw any amount of money at premium high performance solutions but my requirement lay at improving matters on a limited budget. Having come off a Tiger 800XCX with WP suspension that offered great range and performance, it was immediately apparent that I had to dial in way too much pre-load riding solo and the handling was wallowy even with the rebound dampening maxed. There was also nowhere near enough pre-load available with the Mrs on board and we are by no means heavyweights, 90kg and 60kg respectively, fully kitted in riding gear.

Wanting to improve matters on a limited budget I discussed my thoughts and requirement with a local Cape Town motorcycle suspension specialist, Martin Paetzold, and left the bike with him to pull the shock, make some measurements and see how he could improve matters and I am extremely happy with the results. The ride is a little firmer, the wallowing has been totally eliminated and I now ride the bike solo, 10 clicks off max, and about 4 clicks off max 2up, giving me further room with a heavier pillion or additional luggage.

This has been achieved by changing the spring from the stock 83N to 95N (now same as the Ohlins rear for the AT), also by adding a collar to make the pre-load range more usable and by adding a single shim to the rebound dampening. The compression dampening has not been changed but it's range is now more appropriate with the stiffer spring. The total cost including shock removal and re-installation was around $275 !

Would you be willing to share part numbers with us on the spring, collar and shim??? I would LOVE to give this a try!
I am unfortunately unable to as I do not stock the parts, nor did I do the actual work myself but taking the spring out and measuring the physical specifics should make replacing it with a 95N fairly easy. I will see if I can see/measure the height of the spacer for you but unfortunately my knowledge shim sizes/specs are zero and this is internal.
