I have long had a question about these tank bags, whether Honda or after-market: do they scratch the paintwork of the bike/petrol tank area? If I opt for an after-market bag, which brand is considered best? Thanks in advance.

When I bought my genuine Honda tank bag it came with transparent stickers to protect the tank. An absolute pain to stick on without creases or bubbles, but I’m far happier with them on. It only needs the magnet to pick up a little piece of metal and the scratching will start. All in all I’m happy with the setup though.

Salty, thanks for the info.

I'm really in two minds about whether a tank bag is the most useful type of bike luggage, and if there's a scratch-risk from using one, that's even more of a dis-incentive - especially when I consider that Honda OEM luggage seems very pricey ($$$) to me...

Hi I have the exact same bag on my At at the moment and yes I can mark the tank but I have protected the paint with a 3M paint protection film, I was going to do it anyway, the bag goes on and I am happy the paint is protected, the 3M film is so easy to apply and leaves a really nice gloss finish... any way the bag is still for sale if anyone wants a really useful bag..

With magnetic bags, the bottom and the tank surface has to be wiped clean from time-to-time of dust and debris to prevent paint surface hazing. This is particularly true for dusty riding conditions.

17AT fitment? That’s about $82.50 today and Airmail to New York. Let’s see what we can do. If it fits and is cost effective, I’ll put that thing to work immediately. Used to use a Joe Rocket magnetic tank bag on my ‘97 Suzuki TL1000S, long ago… loved it.
