Hey AT owners.

I asked the dealer when I picked up my used 2020 last week if the bike was included in the fuel recall and said that apparently the recall was done in may 2020.
As I am in the middle of installing spot lights , I decided to remove the tank to get the wires in place and also look inside the tank at the filter.
Much to my disappointment, I found this black rubbery stuff in the filter and around the filter.

I was going to call honda but I doubt that will do anything.

The next thing would be to purchase the Guglatech filter system and install that while the tank is off.
I’m asking for feedback from those who have installed it.

There are pages of another thread of the whole fuel issue but this more of those who have purchased the Guglatech system.

Thanks
Heli

Yes, installed on a 2019, couple years ago. My tank was full of gunk, probably still some in there, which I'll rinse out when I do valves in a year or two. Can't think of a good reason not to put one on, cheap insurance even if your tank is clean. Never know when you might get dirty fuel if you're off the beaten path.

I have the filter. The recall was done but the filter isn't installed. I figure I can do it at a later time.

i installed it , if the recall was not performed you will have white or grey material , not black.

I read on that one topic with plenty pages that some say it was paint. Some say to do with welds.
I have the black version so that’s why I thought it could be paint. I also wondered with stuff I found if it could be some sealer / gasket maker that when the part wastightened, oozed out a little.
just thoughts.
I’ll be ordering the filter today.

thanks.

The problem was related @ welding ossidation rest , no sealant or liquid bond are used in the tank construction phase ( or for fuellevel sender 7 fuel pump) . Maybe it´s something else .

I installed the Gulatech filter on my 2018. Had a good tank didn't need it, however I did not like the filtering capacity of the "tea bag" stock filter. I like the Gulatech sock, a good designed quality product.

While restoring old bikes the number 1 problem is tank contamination.. This bike will one day be old and someone will thank me if it ever sits neglected, like many end up doing.

I bought a BMW Boxer Cup, 2005, with 5,000 miles, mint and pristine.. It had a repair bill from the previous owner for $2,500 for fuel pump, filter, ect. Just to get it running right and it has an aluminum tank.

I installed the guglatech (actually Purmotors) Mazinga strainer and pre-filter, this afternoon on my ‘17 CRF1000. She’s been drinking “premium” Peruvian gas for the past year and a half. I got caught in a rain cloud at about 15k feet and she started lurching all over the place. Got back down to normal human altitudes and the issues seemed to have subsided. Never had issues with the bike at similar altitudes before so I didn’t believe that was the main issue. My dad, @Beowulf, and I deduced that under the circumstances it was likely a fuel issue. Decided to check the fuel pump and learned about the guglatech, which seemed to be the way to go.

Finally found one in stock at Purmotors.it. It shipped from Italy and took a while to get here. It’s apparently the same thing as the Guglatech. Some sort of partnership or subsidiary most likely. Same part number (MFPP-002 mazinga).

Install was fairly straightforward. They included this extra bolt and goofy star washer, but it wasn’t obviously what it was supposed to be for. Maybe one of you can enlighten me, but for the time being I put it back together the same way it came apart.

Upon inspection, my strainer was black and partially caked with gunk. I soaked the actual filter in gas and injector cleaner and gently back flushed it with compressed air. After a couple cycles of this it eventually stopped spewing black crud.

Pro tip, when placing the zip tie on make sure that the zip ties connection doesn’t go on in such a place that it interferes with the fuel tank opening when re-installing. That was kind of a bitch to get moved out of the way.

I was worried that this was going to be all for naught, but after seeing the amount of black **** in there I’m fairly confident this was my problem. I also noticed that there was a small bit of rust inside the weld of my tank, which was surprising since this wasn’t supposed to be a known issue on the 1000s as far as I understood.

Anyways, the moral of the story is that when you’re in Peru always make sure your pump is wearing a jimmy hat 😀

That’s good to know. I wonder how much of that black was carbon from the filter vise foreign contaminates 😬

There was still a substantial amount of black gunk in the exterior of the strainer prior to my messing with the filter housing. In either case, I’m sure there’s still plenty of carbon in there as I was pretty gentle with the compressor.

Not Sure where your Located - Peru or the states. Or if your 2017 fuel pump / parts match up with a 2020, but those pump filters are cheap. I've been changing them out every year when I store the bike over the winter. These Quantum fit for a 2020. I've seen other filters on there web site for earlier models.
The little star washer is for the nipple when you seat the filter. I goofed with it once, got it on, then never bothered with it again. The bolt, I'm guessing is an extra for the assembly to the plastic pump housing. Two (2) hold the housing and the metal tank mount together.

So then is the consensus that most of the black crud depicted during my pre-filter and strainer install actually from shitty Peruvian gas, or is it more likely to be from said carbon filter?

I didn’t come up with the idea of the light compressor assisted back flush on my own. Rather, it was on the advice of one of the Guglatech videos. Starting to second guess it now in hindsight though.
