Has your 2018-2020+ Africa Twin Adventure Sports experienced fueling/idling/stalling/loss of power?

  • Yes. I have had the dealership/Honda resolve the issue(s) under warranty at no cost.

  • Yes. The dealership resolved it for me, but my warranty was expired and I had to pay out of pocket

  • Yes. I have had these issues, but resolved the problem on my own and Honda is not aware.

  • No. I have not had these issues, but I took precautionary measured (Guglatech Filter, etc.)

  • No. But I am concerned that I will have this issue down the road.

  • I have contacted Honda about my concerns

  • I have filed a Safety Defect Report with NHTSA or other regulatory agency per Owners Manual

At quality forums, like the Africa Twin Forum, we don't hack and slash our fellow ridership. However, we do empathize and attempt to offer assistance and even sometimes free stuff to make them feel better. Take this coming together of this " ... Fueling/Tank Issues ... ": I see a lot of encouragement between members. This is just natural bliss.

Hey everyone,

I have a 2019 ATAS with 1300 kms on the clock and haven't had any issues but I decided to install the Guglatech mazinga pump protection system and fuel filter after reading about the issue.

Like everyone else, and even with only 1300 kms ridden, there were a lot of chips in the tank and filter - see the photos. I cleaned the welds in the tank using a brush, rinsed out the tank several times with petrol and then installed the mazinga and fuel filter.

The bike is now running perfect...

BUT

It seems there is an issue with the fuel level sensor. I filled the tank up to the brim and the gauge is only showing one bar above half. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm fearing that I might have knocked the fuel gauge float when I was cleaning it (?)

Well, haven't experienced this issue yet, but my past luck indicates i will be dealing with it before long. Other than flushing the tank and cleaning the filter, does the dealer really do anything further?
If you have the issue then they will also replace the fuel pump and gasket and both fuel injectors. At least that is what they did to mine.

I don’t see it discussed what the results are after the gunk issue is addressed either by the dealership or by owner. Has the problem not come back? Or is it a ‘band aid’ until the next time? Worried that when (not if) I have the issue and hopefully it’s still under warranty and it is fixed by the dealership, what happens if it returns and now it is out of warranty. Does the sludge eventually go away?

Mine has been in twice for the issue. Honda claims that it is because the dealer didn't clean the tank as thoroughly as they needed to.

My dealership claims they cleaned it as well as they could, but that there were some areas that are difficult to reach.

However both are in agreement that once it has flaked off or been removed, that it does not reform.

Update - if anyone has this fuel sensor issue after disconnecting the battery when taking the tank off, try disconnecting the reconnecting the battery again. This worked for me. Everything is working fine now.

ATAS pump safety? Who cares about stinkin' pump safety?

Got this in the mail for a Honda cage. Are the motorcycles getting the short end of the stick?
Don't they always get the short end? Much like "Lemon Laws" they are skewed toward car owners in many States, including Colorado where it explicitly excludes motorcycle and motorhomes. I believe because motorcycle and motorhomes are considered a luxury and non-essential that they get secondary treatment.

Heh, and lives surrounding those non-essential products are secondary too?

This is not related to the problem documented in this thread. There have been a few cases of fuel pumps not working because of a broken o-ring resulting in not enough gasoline pressure for the engine with symptoms like those described in the letter. It looks like the defect is due to wrong assembly operation in the factory. I think this recall is related to these cases.

That wasn't the point. The point highlighted was the treatment of safety due to the result of a failing Honda fueling component and how it got premium attention. In that regard, it is totally related to the political position of this AT thread.

I can understand your feeling about the tank issue, but this is a different story: they found a broken o-ring in the pump assembly. This is an clearly identifiable defect in the bike which has potentially safety consequences. I think in this case Honda can (and had to) make the safety recall: they know the origin of the problem and can identify a solution to the defect (which actually was in the assembly line not the component itself). Things that for the tank problem clearly they can't do. At least this is the way I see it.

2020 ATAS DCT ES 2,500 miles since May 21st. I've had the power loss issue but it only happened a couple times when it was very hot out. I'm adding crash bars and other stuff so I pulled the tank and it does have the junk issue. The pictures to the dealer and then on to the Honda Rep worked for me. They say new pump and that Honda now has a cleaning procedure for the tank. Dropping mine off today. I'll post back when I pick it back up. I'll still be adding Guglatech filter.

I updated the post header to read:

ATAS safety recall? We don't need no stinkin' ATAS safety recall?

This de-couples the reference to the fuel pump. Maybe that is better.

Thanks. I caught the issue the first day with owning my 2020 ATAS. I’m demanding Honda takes back the faulty ATAS and swap with an AT. Absolutely unacceptable that Honda allows an ATAS to leave the dealership knowing full well this issue is present. Manufacturer needs to claim responsibility for their mistake.
